As I was looking at some friends Facebook pages the other day I looked upon my sisters page who is a high school english teacher and her status said something about a child abuse prevention and recognition training. When looking at this I wondered how people could abuse a child. I personally have a friend who lost a nephew sue to child abuse. This child's story is upsetting but the people who abused him are no serving the time they deserved but I still want to know how anyone can hurt a child. In knowing this story I wondered the facts of child abuse in our nation. This is what I found:
1. Almost five children die everyday as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of 4.
2. Child abuse occurs at every socio-economic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.
3. Ninety percent of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members.
4. Children who have been sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely develop alcohol abuse.
5. Children who have been sexually abused are 3.8 times more likely develop drug addictions.
6. Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy.
7. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds.
8. About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.
9. About 80% of 21 year old that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder.
10. The estimated annual cost resulting from child abuse and neglect in the United States for 2007 is $104 billion.
