News

News can be the barrier of bad news about many different situations. Last night as I was watching the news I found out that a friend of mine died in a car crash. I wish I wouldn't have been able to see the pictures of his accident. I wish I could rewind time and stopped the accident but I can't. So Bryan you will be missed by many.

Holidays

I believe that every family has traditions when it comes to the holiday. For example my aunt always makes sticky buns on Thanksgiving and we always buy Christmas gifts for several children in local homeless shelters. But when traditions are broken it seems that the holiday wasn't normal and you could feel uncomfortable. So I was wondering what everyones favorite family holiday traditions are?

Your Toughest Critic

Going throughout this semester taking several design or art classes I have found that you are your toughest critic. I learned this by doing the different assignments that I was given. I then asked different peoples opinion and most of the time I got positive feedback after that I asked myself my own opinion. I decided I didn't like what I was looking at so I had to start over to get the final product that I wanted. I think that you should have an open mind with your own work and stop being your toughest critic.

Making Nothing Out Of Something

I was recently out taking pictures of different things along the bike path in Piqua, Ohio. I went to take a picture of the sun reflecting off the water and just assumed that the image would somewhat be over exposed but I didn't really care I just personally liked the shot. After reviewing my images from this photo shot I was astonished but what this image looked like. It's not what I was going for as a photographer but I am glad that it is what I got for a photo. The final photo looks like it was shot in black and white while it was shot in color. I am proud of making nothing out of something.

Social Issues

How do you capture a social issue in a picture? I have several ideas but I personally don't want to offend anyone in anyway. I got this specific photography project from my photography professor. I believe that this is an interesting project but I personally believe that it is difficult. I understand that I have rights as a photographer but I also know that there are certain situations that these rights are not accepted. I have many ideas that I could shoot but I don't want to offend anyone so my problem is, is how do you convey a social issue in a photo without offending anyone?

Writing Short

I found writing short difficult because you could only include keywords for your target audience. But I found that completing an ad like this would be helpful for many different occasions.

Interview/Sound Portrait

Transcript

My name Thomas Kinnison, I am forty-eight years old.

Imagine reaching down and picking up a coin it’s very hard to do it’s the simple things that really affect your life that people take advantage of every day.

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus when I was twenty-eight years old. Actually I knew I had something wrong with me prior to that a couple years. I thought I was getting old, I though you know this is what old feels like and I was only twenty-six at the time. Thinking that twenty-six was old at the time, actually when I went to the doctor twenty-six is not old. I see the doctor probably every two months approximately and that has been for the last twenty years and during that time you give blood every visit because of the medications you are on.

I have had approximately ten surgeries to fix replace my joints. My first surgery was my knee it is when I was actually diagnosed with what I have today. I was in surgery to fix a torn tendon in my knee and that is when they noticed something inside my joint was not correct. Since my knee I have had eight operations on my hands, joint replacements, knuckle replacements, and I have also have had a back surgery. When I was going to the doctor that was the first thing I asked can it affect your back. He advised me no its very rare Rheumatoid Arthritis gets in your spine; well I’m one of them very rare cases.

The hardest thing is dealing with what I have and the surgeries that I have had over the last twenty years I guess its been is I’m probably a poor patient, very poor because I don’t do the things that they recommend. Stay out of the sun with one thing because of the medications that I’m on but myself I can’t personally sit in my house and wait for my joints to seize up and sit in a wheelchair, that’s not who I am. So actually I go golfing is it a challenge, yeah its been a challenge there is things you know you have to relearn how to hit the club, swing a club and also after you are done golfing the consequences you are going to pay afterwards. But the consequences well over ways you know the affect it has on my body.

It’s very important that you think positive and don’t actually let it ruin your life, don’t let it take control of your life you take control of it. I think that it’s mainly a mental thing; pain yes there is a lot of pain-involved everyday. Does it bother me, some things do and some things don’t. The hardest thing when you can really feel it, your arthritis active mainly it’s your arthritis you feel active is during a weather change, a cold spell, a rainy spell. I can predict the weather better than a weather man can cause I can feel a front coming in and just through my joints in how sore they are going to be or they are starting to become. It has a lot of affect, the weather has a lot of affect change from summer going into fall this year it was a hard change it actually almost went straight into winter it seemed like and that’s the hardest thing on your joints is that quick change instead of a gradual change, it doesn’t let your body get use to the different temperatures.

The method I would pass on that anybody has Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus mainly is the Lupus can actually kill you if it attacks your major organs but the Rheumatoid Arthritis is to have a positive attitude don’t let it hinder what you want to do in life. If you let the disease, actually it is a disease affect you know the way it wants you to live your not going to live a happy life.

Photoshop

I loved working in photoshop before I was told that I was not aloud to use my creativity. In one of my classes I have only been aloud to work in adobe elements where I was use to working in photoshop cs3 and cs4. I have also not been able to be creative in my editing, like adding text, changing the color to black and white or sepia. The only thing I have been able to do is to enhance my image by the levels, contrast, and brightness. I personally think that if you are trying to get people to explore a editing software you need to let them explore not tell them the specific tools they are aloud to use. But I have been able to be satisfied with certain images that I have taken but I think if I would have been able to add certain effects I would have been more satisfied.

Voting/Marketing

I just don't understand why people have to spend so much money for a campaign. As this years election year comes to an end I realize how frustrating campaigns can be. The fact that people call your house to tell you what to vote for, I personally think that this is rude and interrupting individuals daily lives. I think that signs and television commercials are okay because you have the opportunity to ignore these types of campaigns but a telephone call you have to stop what you are doing to answer the phone. I think that campaigns are important but people need to realize the things they are doing during the campaign, I personally think that some people will get annoyed with some campaigns and vote against the issue that has been campaigned to them wither it is to vote yes or no.

Creativity

Creativity is the use of the imagination of original ideas. (Dictionary.com)

Why is it that when you are forced to be creative your brain puts up a block and your creativity goes out the window? I was recently given a counterpoint photography assignment where we had to use our creativity. We were given two weeks and five counterpoints to take pictures of. The counterpoints I was given was straight and curved, synthetic and natural, colored and bleached, intimacy and distance, and continuous and intermittent. As soon as I was given my counter points and I was told to be creative my brain immediately put up a mental block. It took me almost the whole two weeks to even come up with my ideas to take pictures of. I could never come up with an idea when I sat down to work on the project I would get my ideas either at work or during the middle of class so I had to stop what I was doing to write down my ideas.

So why is that when your forced to be creative you can't?

Tutorials

I have been looking at different tutorials for Adobe Flash on Youtube. These are very helpful in learning how to do different things if you cant stand to read a book. I am trying to create a visual gallery in flash. I have done this in the past but I am not really sure how to recreate exactly what I need. I believe that tutorials are very helpful and I greatly appreciate the individuals that create these videos for me to learn from. So if you ever want to learn how to do something you should try and find a tutorial on how to do that because I believe that it is easier to use as a reference guide than a book.

Clients

Clients can be difficult to work with depending on what they need, how fast they want the products, and the amount of communication they give. I have recently dealt with a client that called and asked if I could take family pictures for them. I agreed to the date and location. That was the only information I was given from the client, when I got to the shoot I was astonished by the size of the family and the amount of different shots they wanted. The family that I thought was five ended up being eleven people. So my original ideas on posing went out the window when I pulled up to the location of the shoot. Also the wanted one with just the parents and kids, then one with the parents, kids, spouses, and grandchildren, one of just the grandchildren, then one of each one of their children’s family. I guess without asking the client more questions you don’t really know what you will be dealing with as a photographer. So I guess doing this photo shoot with this client helped me grow as a photographer by learning from experience. I learned you have to ask more from a client than just time and location you cant just assume what they want as a client.

Interesting Blog

In my digital photography class we have to do weekly image responses. She emailed us a link of a blog recently to do our Image response on. This blog is titled My Hometown Ohio, while looking at this blog I found many different activities and landmarks that I never knew existed in Ohio. So I wanted to share this specific blog with everyone to see how many landmarks and activities you didn't know existed in the state of Ohio.

This link to the blog is: http://www.myhometownohio.blogspot.com/

Pinwheels for Preventions

As I was looking at some friends Facebook pages the other day I looked upon my sisters page who is a high school english teacher and her status said something about a child abuse prevention and recognition training. When looking at this I wondered how people could abuse a child. I personally have a friend who lost a nephew sue to child abuse. This child's story is upsetting but the people who abused him are no serving the time they deserved but I still want to know how anyone can hurt a child. In knowing this story I wondered the facts of child abuse in our nation. This is what I found:

1. Almost five children die everyday as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of 4.

2. Child abuse occurs at every socio-economic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.

3. Ninety percent of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members.

4. Children who have been sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely develop alcohol abuse.

5. Children who have been sexually abused are 3.8 times more likely develop drug addictions.

6. Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy.

7. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds.

8. About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.

9. About 80% of 21 year old that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder.

10. The estimated annual cost resulting from child abuse and neglect in the United States for 2007 is $104 billion.

Where I got these facts: http://www.childhelp.org/resources/learning-center/statistics

I also found a very good website about child abuse prevention. There slogan is Pinwheels for Prevention, here is the link for this website: http://www.pinwheelsforprevention.org/

Friends After High School

In high school how can you be close to so many people but the day after graduation you guys stop talking?

I realized this over the weekend when I was at a social event with some teachers that I had in high school. It was weird that our small class of thirteen I can only tell you where three of them are today. I only know this because of going to college with them. I also think thats its crazy you were so close in high school you barley talk to this day. You may say hello when you run into each other on the street but other than that no one really makes a motion to stay close friends after high school.

Is there a reason for this?
Are we as individuals changing? Or just growing apart?

Camera Stores

The difference between a retail store and a photography store is amazing. I recently went to Fairborn Camera to buy a couple items for my Nikon D90. I went to purchase another DSLR zoom lens and a external flash. If I would have tried to to to a store like Walmart or Meijer I wouldn't have been able to find what I was looking for so in going to a official camera store designed to help you. When I went I was with a good friend of mine who needed help finding some things for her photography class at Sinclair and the employees were able to answer all of our questions and help us locate anything that we needed.

With purchasing all of camera supplies at this specific locations I know that if you have a problem with your camera you can call in for help. So the other day I was having a problem with my camera, it was having an error. So I picked up the phone and they walked me through on how to fix it. I found this outstanding customer service and I believe that this is a very reliable camera store. I would recommend this store to any one that is purchasing a camera or has a question.

Voice

The difference from reading this essay to watching him read it was outstanding. I enjoyed watching him read his essay over reading the essay. I believe that the video had more impact because you could hear the tone within his voice. I believe that they would work good together if you had the actual transcript in your hand while watching the video. I believe that he was speaking to his audience as he read his essay and that I as part of his audience. His voice was created by his audience who made him comfortable and the fact that the essay was created to be funny.

My favorite type of Media

My favorite type of media is photography because it is an interesting way to tell a story. Without words and within the view of the photographer, even if the photo means nothing to the viewer there is something behind it that has a personal meaning to the photographer. I have been taking a digital photography class this semester so within our assignments we have had to become comfortable in telling a story in a photograph. The thing I find most difficult in this class is writing a statement about the photograph I took but I don't know why this is so difficult. I obviously took this photo for a reason but what can I write about it?
